Coronavirus: Myths vs Facts

Amidst the outbreak of COVID-19, there are lots of myths circulating regarding the coronavirus. Don’t worry – we’re here to put your mind at ease. See below for common misconceptions about the coronavirus:

Myth: Only older and more vulnerable people catch COVID-19.

Fact: This is not the case. While it is true that those who are older or have pre-existing health conditions are in greater danger from the coronavirus, the younger generation can also catch COVID-19 and experience symptoms. In most cases, younger people tend to experience mild symptoms of coronavirus.

Myth: Antibiotics help to fight the coronavirus.

Fact. This is not true. Antibiotics are only effective against bacteria, not viruses.

Myth: There is a treatment for COVID-19.

Fact: As of yet, there is no treatment for the coronavirus, though a vaccine is in development.

Coronavirus Mask

Myth: Protective masks stop people from getting the virus.

Fact: Disposable masks cannot stop droplets from entering the mouth and nose, and cannot prevent a person from getting infected if they have the virus on their hands and touch their face under the mask. Lightweight masks can lessen the spread of germs if the wearer is infected, however, only professional, heavy-duty respirator masks can offer adequate protection.

Myth: COVID-19 is not transmitted in hot climates.

Fact: According to the World Health Organisation, there is evidence that the coronavirus spreads in all climates, hot or cold.

Myth: COVID-19 is spread through mosquito bites.

Fact: There is no evidence to support this. COVID-19 is spread through droplets from the mouth or nose.

Myth: Thermal scanners detect the coronavirus in others.

Fact: Thermal scanners may be able to detect when people have a high temperature, however, they will not be able to identify those who have COVID-19 before they experience a fever.
